Architecture cannot be disconnected from its surrounding landscape and urban design, so before we could start with a design for this school, a thorough study was made of the existing qualities. On one side you have the spatial planning of the characteristic old village of Sloten, now part of Amsterdam, and on the other side the ecological zone “De Groene As” (The Green Axis), that connects smaller and larger nature areas between Amstelland (Amsterdam) and Spaarnwoude (Haarlem).
The school became a connection between these areas. The atmosphere and scale of the unique characteristics of Sloten can therefore be found in the design: friendliness, security and recognisability. A green roof and the use of natural materials ensured that the green axis stayed intact.
The form and the use of color and materials have also been applied in such a way that they connect to the richness and experience of the child for the better of his / her development in every age phase.
Total area 3.395 m².
